We are profoundly inspired by Allen Newell and Herbert A. Simon - foundational figures in the history of artificial intelligence, widely regarded as pioneers who helped define the field’s scope, methods, and ambitions.
In the mid-1950s, they developed the Logic Theorist (1956), considered the first AI program. It could prove mathematical theorems from Principia Mathematica, demonstrating that machines could perform reasoning tasks previously thought exclusive to humans. This breakthrough marked the beginning of symbolic AI—representing knowledge explicitly and manipulating it with formal rules.
Beyond their technical contributions, Newell and Simon shaped AI’s intellectual identity: they championed the view that thinking—human or machine—can be studied scientifically, formalized, and implemented computationally.
Their influence was recognized with numerous honors, including the Turing Award (1975) for their joint contributions to AI and human cognition.
